BUILDING CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS
On Saw Mill Road

September
2008

August and September brought visible exterior progress to our construction, thanks to many helpful hands.

The United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers & Allied Workers Local 12 volunteers under Butch Davidson were able to finish installing the roof. The house wrap, donated by Dow Chemical Company via Rings End of Bethel, was installed around the exterior, followed by the windows, giving the building some definition. An even bigger esthetic advance came with the framing of the portico on the front entrance – adding some real personality!

Planning for the sewer installation continued, while some of the small mountain of unsuitable rocky site materials began to be relocated by the volunteer efforts of M. Cardillo Excavating, LLC. Much more site work will be necessary in coming months to prepare for the parking lot and its retaining wall.

United Way Day of Caring on September 16th brought enthusiastic community volunteers from neighboring Praxair Corporation in the Corporate Center, led by Brian Morgan of the HR department. His crew included HR and IT employees Peter Woloszyn, Jim Annunziato, John Lachs, Edwin Martinez and Dick Lowndes. They accomplished a ton of site work clean-up, as well as taking turns at construction. Some have volunteered to come back on their own time and help out again. As we are learning, this is really satisfying work!

As we turn our attention to interior work, planning is already underway for the electrical and mechanical systems. The Connecticut Carpenters Apprentice & Training Fund workers will be ending their months of work soon, as other union trades volunteers and contractors begin their portions of the community project.

In coming weeks and months, we will be offering naming opportunities for brick pathways and the terrace, as well as continuing to offer naming opportunities for rooms and windows, enabling tributes to loved ones and corporate participation.
