On Thursday, October 1, Ann’s Place and the Praxair Cancer Center co-sponsored a program on balancing work and cancer.   Kevin Berrill, clinical social worker at Ann’s Place, introduced the program, which was attended by Ann’s Place clients and health care professionals.  “A cancer diagnosis and cancer treatment can be overwhelming for some,”  said Kevin.  “Suddenly, a life already full with responsibilities must now stretch to accommodate myriad medical appointments, tests, procedures, and, for some, debilitating treatments.   For those who are already working, dealing with cancer is like having a second job.   Here at Ann’s Place, some of our clients must leave the work temporarily, or are trying to work through treatment, or are trying to get back in the saddle of work after being out months or years.”  Christine Brennan, Associate Director of Programs at the New York City-based organization, Cancer and Careers, discussed how to navigate work issues based on one’s on health condition, abilities, and work circumstances.   She addressed such questions as “How much work can I do?” “What kind of accommodations can I ask for?” “What are my legal rights?” “Does the Family and Medical Leave Act apply to me?”  Christine encouraged Ann’s Place clients to reach out to Cancer & Careers for free employment coaching, assistance with resume revision, and help with other issues having to do with cancer and the workplace.  For more information, contact www.cancerandcareers.org
